Frequently asked questions
True Gum
What is regular chewing gum made of?
Regular chewing gum has a base containing plastic polymers (the same as in car tyres and plastic bottles) and resin. It includes food-grade softeners, preservatives, sweeteners, artificial colouring, flavouring, and a hard or powdered polyol coating.
That gives us a plastic-free, palm oil-free, vegan, sustainable alternative to conventional chewing gum – better for our stomachs and the planet.
Is there plastic in regular chewing gum?
Regular chewing gum contains plastic. The gum base consists of different elements, including polyethylene and other components found in car tyres, plastic bottles, and bags. Plastic is also used in most packaging for regular chewing gum.
Thankfully, plastic-free chewing gum like True Gum exists to offer a more sustainable chewing experience. We use a tree-based gum instead of a plastic one and include sustainable packaging.
Our gum is plastic-free, naturally flavoured, vegan, palm oil-free, and has the same beloved chewy texture and rich flavours.
You can read more about the plastic problem here.

Are there calories in sugar-free chewing gum?
The average piece of sugar-free chewing gum contains between two and five calories.Could chewing gum be harmful? Excessive chewing can cause jaw pain and headaches. If the chewing gum contains BHA and BHT, these antioxidants have been referred to as hormone-disrupting. Digestive stress and laxative effects are other potential side effects.
Plastic-based gum is also harmful to the environment, contributing to the massive issue of plastic pollution. A plant-based, vegan alternative to chewing gum is safer for the environment and removes the negative effects of plastic and artificial additives for human health.
How long does it take to break down True Gum?
We are currently conducting scientific research on the biodegradability of our plastic-free chewing gum and are awaiting conclusive results.
Our gum is plant-based and plastic-free. We use a tree-based gum and remove palm oil and artificial ingredients. That is why True Gum will presumably break down faster than regular plastic-based gum.
The plastic base and components in regular chewing gum make it resistant to biological breakdown processes. That’s why it sticks to our streets for a very long time. Sources suggest that regular chewing gum can take between 50 and 500 years to decompose.
What is True Gum made of?
True Gum is a plant-based, plastic-free, vegan, naturally flavoured gum. It starts with a 100% plant-based core. We use sap from gum trees to achieve our chewy texture and stay away from plastic.
Along with this, we source plant-based raw ingredients for natural flavours. To stay true to our mission, we also say a big NO THANKS to plastic packaging and use cardboard boxes to deliver our mouth-watering plastic-free, vegan treats.
Is regular chewing gum hormone disrupting?
Regular chewing gum, including children’s gum, often contains BHA and BHT. They are suspected endocrine disruptors (Danish Consumer Council THINK Chemicals, 2021).True Gum does not include BHA, BHT, or any artificial or plastic elements and instead uses a tree-based gum and natural flavouring.
